In what has become a holiday tradition, the
Invincible Czars bring a cavalcade of music and
merriment to stages across Texas every year.Their
show centers around a whimsical rock interpretation
of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite but has expanded
in recent years to include the band’s unique
interpretations of other seasonal favorites.
The fun began in December of 2004 when the
Invincible Czars premiered their arrangements of the
Nutcracker Suite in Austin and has since expanded to
include
collaborations with civic and arts organizations
such as the Downtown Austin Alliance, Boys & Girls
Clubs of Austin, KUT, Austin
Children's Museum, Ballet Austin,
Houston Ballet, Houston Public Radio
and Graham Reynolds’ Golden Arm Trio. The group has refined this act into two
versions: a rollicking, loud rock version for adult
crowds and a quieter, family-centric version for all
occasions.
Throughout the years, the Czars have transformed
their live Nutcracker show into a full-on multimedia
extravaganza that often includes dancers, video and
lights, but the main focus remains on the music
itself.
The Czars have reimagined Tchaikovsky’s original in
ways that surprise and delight even the most
seasoned Nutcracker veterans. The quiet Arabian Dance is transformed into a
driving metal-influenced adagio; the Dance of the
Mirlitons morphs from the original’s frothy
flute-centric romp to a musical collage of disco,
swing, and metal in the Czars’ version; and the
ever-popular Miniature Overture becomes a lively
Western shuffle. The Invincible Czars’ Nutcracker Suite live
show truly includes something for everyone.
